This advanced course provides educators and school staff with up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding, child protection and Prevent duties. You’ll explore key legislation, policies and case studies, learn how to recognise and respond to signs of abuse, and understand your role in protecting children and young people from harm, neglect and radicalisation.

What you'll learn
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people is everyone’s responsibility. Education settings including play centres, nurseries, schools and colleges play an essential role in protecting children and young people who may be at risk from harm, abuse and neglect. They do this by creating a safe environment, providing robust policies and procedures, regular training and updates ensuring that the adults who work in the organisation, including supply staff and volunteers, don’t pose a risk to children.

Completion of this course will provide you with all the necessary up-to-date knowledge with regards to government legislation, policy, guidance and best practice from experts in the field to show all safeguards are put in place to protect children and young people from preventable harm.As a result of completing this course you will:

- Have an applicable context of safeguarding through studying high profile case studies
- Learn key safeguarding legislation and 5 mandatory safeguarding policies for every organisational approach to protecting children
- Know your role in ensuring the safety and welfare of children and young people in your environment
- Understand the benefits of early help and what to look out for
- Understand the different categories of child abuse and accurately identify the signs of abuse under these categories
- Develop strategies to deal with safeguarding children and young people in online environments
- Recognise and know the appropriate response(s) in handling disclosures of abuse from young people
- Know your role on preventing radicalisation and extremism
Course content
This course is separated into eight modules of learning:
Module One: Principles of Safeguarding & Child Protection
This module will cover important legislation relating to safeguarding and child protection.
Module Two: Legal Framework, Legislation, Policy and Guidance
This module will cover important policy-shaping legislation over the years including: The Children Act 1989 and 2004, the Education Act 2002, Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023, Voyeurism (Offences) Act 2019 and Keeping Children Safe In Education. It will also provide information about organisational responsibility and policy formation.
Module Three: Early Help and Contextual Safeguarding
This module will cover the benefits of early help in promoting the welfare of children and young people and what to look out for, as well as providing an overview of contextual safeguarding. This is an approach that engages with extra-familial dynamics of risk in adolescence.
Module Four: Child Abuse Categories, Types and Signs of Abuse
This module will cover the various categories and types of abuse that you might encounter in your environment and how to identify the key signs and indicators which can help you to take appropriate steps to safeguard and protect the child or young person.
Module Five: Keeping Children Safe Online; An Introduction to Online Safety
This module will take into consideration how technology has forever changed how we communicate. Furthermore, how technology has brought about new ways in which children can be abused. However, this module will also consider both the benefits of technology and how to combat misuse through effective online safety.
Module Six: Dealing with Disclosures and Referring Concerns
This module will cover the various types of disclosures that are commonly encountered in an environment with children and young people. It will also provide methods of identifying abuse and will give strategies for how to properly handle a disclosure.
Module Seven: Preventing Radicalisation and Extremism in Young People
This module will provide an introduction and overview to critical radicalisation-prevention programmes such as “Prevent” and “Channel” which help to identify and protect children and young people from falling into extremism which might lead to terrorism.
Module Eight: Information Sharing and Recording
This module will provide an introduction and overview of the principles and requirements to share information which is a vital element in identifying and tackling all forms of abuse and neglect and in promoting a child’s welfare. It will also explore the key requirements of recording.
