Effective Questioning
Welcome to this course on awareness of effective questioning. This course is one of four in a series based on Barak Rosenshine’s "Principles of Instruction". The principles themselves have been refined and tweaked over a number of years and have, most recently, been presented as a series of ten principles, which we will learn about in this course.

What you'll learn
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- An understanding why effective questioning is so important
- An understanding of what kind of questions are most useful to ask
- How to check for learner understanding and how to use this information to inform adaptive teaching
Course content
This course is separated into two modules of learning:
Module One: Asking Questions
In short, questioning is crucial because it is our mechanism of identifying if learners have understood the knowledge that we shared with them, in the way that we intended them to. This makes questioning for teachers a very unique skill: most people ask questions because they want to find something out that they don’t already know.
Module Two: Check for understanding
Rosenshine’s study found that asking questions more often increases the effectiveness of a teacher. However, his research indicated that to maximise this effectiveness, teachers should use questioning to specifically check for understanding. Many of the questioning strategies covered in Module One can be used for this purpose, but there are other techniques that we will now cover that can be deployed for this purpose.
