Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

This Female Genital Mutilation course provides an awareness and understanding of what FGM is and its identifiable signs, as well as what to do in the event of having a concern regarding a girl being a victim of FGM. It aims to provide tools to prepare learners prior to undertaking any training in relation to FGM. Learners should be warned that due to the nature of this course, there may be issues discussed which are sensitive and may be upsetting to some learners.

What you'll learn

In this course, you will develop a clear understanding of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), including the ability to define it and identify its four main types. You will learn how to respond sensitively and appropriately when speaking with a survivor, as well as gain insight into the cultural contexts in which FGM is practiced. The course also covers the legal framework and mandatory reporting requirements, helping you understand your responsibilities when concerns arise. Additionally, you will explore how common FGM is in the UK, learn to recognise who may be at risk and the signs to look out for, and become familiar with the support services available to both staff and potential victims.
