Early Career Teachers - Creating Independent Learners
The aim of this course is to develop your understanding of ‘independent learners’ and independent learning. It is applicable to teachers in primary or secondary phases as the approaches explored are transferable. By the end of this session, you will understand what we mean by the term ‘independent learners’ and why this is important. In addition, you will be able to articulate key features of successful independent learning and have considered a range of strategies to implement in your classroom to support the development of independent learners.

What you'll learn
In this course, you will develop a clear understanding of what is meant by the term independent learners and why fostering independence is so important. You will build knowledge of the key features that make a successful independent learner and explore a wide range of practical strategies to help promote and support independence in learners effectively.
Course content
This course is separated into three modules of learning:
Module One: Independent Learning Defined and Why it Matters
In this module, we will build upon the definition we have already encountered of what independent learning is to gain greater clarity. We will consider what it means for a learner to be independent, as well as clarify what it is not. We will explore the reasons why it is important that we invest time in helping our learners to become independent, both in terms of the benefits in our classrooms, but also beyond school.
Module Two: Key Features of Effective Independent Learning
Module two will explore what independent learning might look like in the classroom and what the essential components of independent learning are from your perspective as a teacher. Then, from a learner’s perspective, consider the skills and behaviours that they need to develop in order to be independent.
Module Three: Developing Independence in Learners
In this module, you will think about the next steps that you will take to help learners in your classroom become independent. You will consider practical strategies, including approaches to planning and lesson design. It is important at this stage to emphasise the need to take this process slowly.
